will be addressing the Vancouver Institute on February 24, 2001 at 8:15 p.m. in Lecture Hall No. 2 in the Woodward Instructional Resources Centre, University of British Columbia.
Discovering Microscopic Worlds
Dr. Humphrey was introduced to electron microscopy during her Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography from Southampton University. She hosted "Small Wonders" on the Discovery Channel for two years and has two children's science books (1999) of stereo SEM pictures: 3D Bees and Micro Fleas and 3D Lungs and Micro Tongues. Dr. Humphrey has produced 21 4ftx4ft plates "Welcome to the World of Scanning Electron Microscopy" to be displayed at the Omnimax theatre at Science World. The Electron Microscopy Facility which she runs is used by the Faculties of Science and Medicine to study subjects as diverse as the heart, liver and lungs, sharks, red tide, pollen grains, viruses, and bacteria.
