will be addressing the Vancouver Institute on March 3, 2001 at 8:15 p.m. in Lecture Hall No. 2 in the Woodward Instructional Resources Centre, University of British Columbia.
Oceanography in the Service of Fisheries
In December, Dr. Parsons was the first Canadian to win the $700,000 Japan Prize, considered on a par with the Nobel awards, in part because five Japan Prize winners have also been Nobel Prize laureates. "The fish of the world are in a terrible state. It's time the fishing industry looked at what they've done to the sea," Parsons said after it was announced he had won the prize. In his four decades as a Canadian oceanographer, Dr. Parsons pioneered a research methodology that tries to replace traditional methods of studying fish population patterns with an emphasis on understanding and nurturing fish habitat. This lecture is sponsored by UBC's Office of the Vice-President (Research).
