TWO VERSIONS OF CHRISTIAN WARFARE:
THE CRUSADES AND THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE

Professor Laiou is one of the most distinguished living historians of medieval Byzantium, successor of the Roman Empire which survived for over a millenium and which continues to exert a powerful influence, even today, over a vast area of the Old World including the Balkans. Professor Laiou's books and article probe the remarkable complexity of this Empire, including its heterogeneous ethnic composition, its social fabric, economy, the condition and status of women at all levels of society, and the power of ceremony and ritual in religious and political life.
