WL has two “dispose” methods: delete via IMAP or move to trash folder.
So you switched to using the IMAP delete method.

When you delete via IMAP with Gmail the label is removed. So if you
delete from Inbox, the Inbox label is removed. If you delete from the
“Personal” label folder, the Personal label is removed. (This is Gmail
specific, most IMAP implementations use delete to actually mean
delete.)

Did you try an access folder? Should look like:

  %:me/clear@imap.gmail.com:993!

Use `m A` in Folders mode to add an access group.
