UNMASKED AT MIDNIGHT: SOUTH AFRICA'S TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION
Educated at Rhodes University, Oxford University, and Drew University, Dr. Boraine was ordained as a Methodist minister in 1956, and in 1970 was elected as the youngest-ever President of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa. In 1974, he was elected to the South Africa legislature as a member for the opposition Progressive Party. Together with Dr van Zyl Slabbert, former Leader of the Opposition, he formed the Institute for Democracy in South Africa (IDASA), and in 1994 started Justice in Transition, a non-governmental organisation whose express objective was to facilitate South Africans to deal with the history and effects of the apartheid years. In 1996, Dr. Boraine was appointed by President Mandela as Vice Chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa. Elected Fellow of the Center for International Affairs at Harvard University as well as Mansfield College, Oxford University, other honours include an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Rhodes University and the Harvard Peace Prize.
