THE VIRTUES OF VIOLENCE: GLADIATORS, THE ARENA, AND THE ROMAN SYSTEM OF VALUES
A native of South Africa, Dr. Coleman received her graduate education at Oxford University and joined the faculty of Harvard University in 1998 after a teaching career in Africa and Ireland. She has published extensively in the areas of Latin literature and history. Her works include: "Art in the daily life of the Romans," "Some Roman women c AD 100," "Animals in the Roman World" and "Fatal charades: Roman executions staged as mythological enactments." Dr. Coleman has made numerous contributions to the media, including the BBC, National Public Radio, the Discovery Channel, Grenada Television, and the History Channel. Dr. Coleman was special consultant to Hollywood's Dreamworks studio in the recent production of the movie Gladiator.
