will be addressing the Vancouver Institute on December 9, 2000 at 8:15 p.m. in Lecture Hall No. 2 in the Woodward Instructional Resources Centre, University of British Columbia.

Chinese Excellence in Mathematics Teaching: Can We Match It In North America?

A graduate of Harvard University and UC-Berkeley, Dr. Howe has taught at SUNY-Stony Brook, Rutgers, Oxford, the University of Bonn and Hebrew University and served as a visiting member of Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study. He has also been a Guggenheim Foundation fellow, a member of the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Science. His lecture to The Vancouver Institute is co-sponsored by UBC's Department of Mathematics which is host to an International conference on Mathematics in Vancouver during December.
