will be addressing the Vancouver Institute on March 11, 2000 at 8:15 p.m. in Lecture Hall No. 2 in the Woodward Instructional Resources Centre, University of British Columbia.

The Role of the Courts in a Modern Democracy

A native of Alberta, Justice McLachlin joined the Faculty of Law at UBC in 1974. She was appointed to the County Court of Vancouver in 1981 and subsequently elevated to the BC Supreme Court in 1981 and the BC Court of Appeal in 1985. Justice McLachlin returned to the BC Supreme Court in 1988 as Chief Justice and within one year was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada. She assumed the office of Chief Justice of Canada in January of this year. This lecture is co-sponsored by UBC's Faculty of Law.
