The Advancement of Women: Why So Slow?

Dr. Valian is one of the most influential scholars of our times. She draws on the disciplines of psychology, sociology, economics, and biology to examine the invisible barriers that explain differences in salary, rank, and rates of promotion for men and women in the professions, science, and academia. As one scholar has noted, "Valian documents the variables which can interfere with a woman's ability to take herself seriously as a scholar, and thus ultimately, with her ability to perform. The argument is so carefully constructed and the evidence so meticulously presented that the case is overwhelming."
